MedTech CoE to nurture 50 startups over five years

The centre has been set up with an estimated budget of Rs 22 crores and will be housed at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow with a built-up space of 15,000 sq ft   

With an estimated budget of Rs 22 crores, the MedTech – A Center of Entrepreneurship (CoE) will nurture 50 startups over five years, stimulating R&D in medical electronics and health informatics while facilitating an entrepreneurial ecosystem to promote young innovators to create affordable, high-quality indigenous medical products, drive employment, and contribute to the economy. This CoE at Lucknow is being set up by STPI & MeitY in collaboration with Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow; Department of IT & Electronics (Govt. of UP); Association of Medical Device Industry (AiMED); and Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ). Dr Saurabh Srivastava, Former Chairman of NASSCOM, Founder, Indian Angel Network has given his consent to be the Chief Mentor of MedTech CoE.

The CoE will be housed at the SGPGI campus, with a built-up space of 15,000 sq ft. MedTech CoE is bringing together a pool of 16 mentors and 25 partners from different categories like Academic, Industry, Networking Partners, Investment etc viz. SGPGI, SIIC IIT Kanpur, IIIT Lucknow, IET Lucknow, KIHT, TiELucknow, General Electric; Wipro; Siemens and Philips (India) etc. which will be connected with startups. In this CoE 26 early-stage startups have been selected from nearly 150 applications and further 51 more startups have applied to join the MedTech CoE.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State Electronics & IT and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Govt of India will inaugurate MedTech Centre of Entrepreneurship established at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow.

Keeping in view the potential of Blockchain technology, MeitY has approved setting of an STPI CoE in Blockchain at Gurugram. The First Cohort of Apiary CoE consisting of 10 start-ups has completed its Boot Camp and preparing for pitching to the Investors. The Second Idea Challenge Programme (ICP 2.0) is being launched on Friday, 27th Aug 2021.

Former Trai official Arvind Kumar joins as director-general of STPI

Arvind Kumar, former senior advisor at telecom regulator Trai, has joined as the director-general of the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), the state-owned autonomous organisation said on Monday. Before joining STPI, Kumar was working with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) since 2004.

''STPI, in my opinion, should serve as a one-stop-shop for technology start-ups. I believe that start-ups can primarily contribute in fulfilling the government's vision of a USD 1-trillion digital economy,'' Kumar said.

STPI is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and focuses on building technology entrepreneurship and innovation in the country. It has launched over 25 centres of entrepreneurship in emerging technology domains.

Currently, STPI-registered units have crossed the Rs 5-lakh-crore exports mark. It is one of the largest technology incubators in India with an area of about 13 lakh square feet spread across the country.  STPI is also assisting in the formulation of the India BPO Promotion Scheme 2.0. Further, to strengthen the electronics sector, STPI has undertaken the rolling out of the Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0) Scheme.

Kumar holds an M.Tech degree from the Indian Institute of Technology-Varanasi and has also worked with the state-owned Centre for Development of Telematics before joining Trai.

Arvind Kumar joins STPI as Director General

Shri Arvind Kumar has joined as Director General of Software Technology of India (STPI).  Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.

STPI is fuelling the culture of tech entrepreneurship and innovation in the country by launching 25+ Centres of Entrepreneurship in emerging technology domains. NGIS is flagship program of MeitY implemented by STPI to realise the vision of NPSP to democratise software product development in Tier-2/3 cities by providing a robust ecosystem, which will lead to IPR creation, product development, and generate employment opportunities for skilled talent pool. Under his abled leadership STPI will further reach new heights.

Currently, STPI-registered units have reached IT/ITeS/ESDM exports over Rs. 5 lakh crore. STPI is one of the largest tech incubators in India with an area of approx.13 lakh sq. ft. spread across various Tier 1/2/3 cities. Before joining STPI, Shri Arvind Kumar was working in Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) since 2004. As advisor in TRAI, he was responsible for broadband, data security and privacy issues, manufacturing, DTH, IPTV, TV broadcasting and OTT, after having worked since 1997 in the Indian Government-run premier technology centre, C-DoT. He holds an MTech degree from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi.
